WHAT WE ARE LOVING - JULY

Here's where we connect you with our favorite tips and tricks about all things health and wellness. It's also a new month, which brings about new opportunities for growth, education, community, and of course, self-care.

WHAT WE'RE UP TO

This Sunday, we will be hosting a dual Fourth of July/The Still Point 14th Anniversary party that we are beyond excited about. Featuring the music of Baltimore-based bass clarinetist/composer Todd Marcus—one of the few jazz artists worldwide to focus their work primarily on the bass clarinet—our parking lot will be full of soul and familiar faces. Bring a chair and cooler and join us Sunday afternoon from 1-3:30 p.m. RSVP is encouraged, but not required.

WHAT WE'RE LISTENING TO

Beyond the soulful and mesmerizing jazz of Todd Marcus, we are also listening to ‘Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung,’ the mantra for the sacred healing meditation first taught in the Summer of 1973. This is a great track to meditate to or for bringing about relaxation and stillness during a stressful day. Listen on Insight Timer.

WHAT WE'RE READING

Blue Ticket: A Novel is the perfect summer read, and has been touted as one of the best books of the year by The Guardian. Read the description below and pick up a copy at Busboys and Poets.

Calla knows how the lottery works. Everyone does. On the day of your first bleed, you report to the station to learn what kind of woman you will be. A white ticket grants you marriage and children. A blue ticket grants you a career and freedom. You are relieved of the terrible burden of choice. And once you've taken your ticket, there is no going back. But what if the life you're given is the wrong one? When Calla, a blue-ticket woman, begins to question her fate, she must go on the run. Pregnant and desperate, Calla must contend with whether or not the lottery knows her better than she knows herself—and what that might mean for her child. With Blue Ticket, Sophie Mackintosh has created another mesmerizing, refracted vision of our world that explores the impossible decisions women have to make when society restricts their choices.

WHAT WE'RE TRYING

Let’s face it, a year of working from home and being more sedentary than usual wasn’t great for our bodies. So, we’re trying out steady-state cardio and already seeing results. GAIAM blog states that “any cardiovascular/aerobic activity that is sustained for an extended time (usually starting at about 10 to 15 minutes for beginners and 20 to 90 minutes for more fit athletes) at a fixed intensity qualifies as steady-state cardio training,” (GAIAM).

We’ve found 45 min/4 times a week is the sweet spot for steady-state cardio training and is good for maintaining muscle mass, burning calories, building up your aerobic fitness, and (something we’ve all struggled with) keeping up with the fitness plan.

WHAT WE'RE EATING

In preparation for the launch of The Green Rooster—a plant-based food truck featuring profoundly nutritious food that is both delicious and deeply healing—we’re testing out the recipe for the Kale Brussels Salad. Made with kale, brussels, parmesan, toasted almonds (could be walnuts) lemon, olive oil, caramelized shallots, salt and pepper, this salad gets 5 stars from our family. The Green Rooster Food Truck will be parked outside of The Still Point Spa—coming soon! In the meantime, visit The Green Rooster website and sign-up to the newsletter list so that you can be the first to try out this salad and other great recipes.
